The Sermon Instinct

Share

While talking or writing about any subject matter, I have an affinity to go in “sermon mode” making general suggestions on something that might be a very subjective opinion on a situation very specific to me.

One of the reasons why I started writing this blog was to express what my current opinion or understanding is on a particular matter. And by writing ~100 small tidbits, I would have a good set that would reflect my overall thought portfolio and hopefully increase my self-awareness.

But, since I see myself as someone who is in what technologists call permanent beta, it’s really not fair to give sermons, especially to someone who has just started on self/domain exploration. This helps me to get a fresh perspective from them on things, that I might have not noticed because of my inherent biases. Qualifying my statements and thoughts with “In my opinion“, “As I see it“, “In my limited experience“ etc, has allowed me to put this to practice.

Although, I am trying to balance this with not shying away from giving my opinions and perspectives on things. I think valuing my perspective as one of the many, but definitely not inconsequential, contributes to better understanding for others as well. I think conviction, balanced with probabilistic thinking, is quite key to decision making and move forward.
